Yes, WME now shows surveys on a select few pages. Why? Because the site is getting more and more visitors, and I simply cannot keep up with the webhosting costs. Let me explain a little:
I’ve tried requesting donations. That lasted two weeks, and 150.000 visitors later, 1 person managed to chip in with $10. My server bill is nearly $450 per month…
I’ve tried subtle Adsense; Besides not many people clicking on them, most of them were showing my competitors ads. Not an ideal situation.
I’ve refuse to go with other ad networks, simply because of the quality of ads; most are very annoying – blinking, sounds, popups, popunders. I don’t want to litter the site with that garbage.
So why surveys? Because it only takes one minute of your time to fill out. It doesn’t cost you any money. Once they’re done, they won’t be back for the person why did one for a while. Is taking a minute to fill out a survey per week too much to ask? I spend hours per week getting the episodes on here for the fans.
Yes, I know survey sites have a bad name, that’s because there are a ton of sites out there that simply trick people into believing that there really is a video after the survey. You all know that WME has real videos. We don’t lie.
So in a nutshell; I can understand your frustration, because you might have had bad experiences with survey sites before, but at the moment it is the only way I can see that will help me pay to keep the site online.
There are no surveys on the episodes themselves, so I still offer free TV shows. The only pages that do have the surveys are the main show navigation pages. This to keep the holdup to a minimum for you. There was initially an option to simply close the survey window, but since 9 out of 10 people just used this, there was no point in having the survey come up in the first place.
I do apologize if this causes you any inconvenience, but if you have a better idea for me to keep this site free for everyone (including me!) I’d be happy to hear what you have to say. Please leave your comments below.
Bob

I totally get it Bob… running a site is hard, expensive, and time consuming… at least you’ve gone out of your way to explain why you have the surveys up to begin with… oh keep the donations option up just for kicks though… it might come in handy… well I looked this up for you… maybe some of these options will help.. but i’m sure you’ve googled ways to earn money on the site already… hope it helps anyways… :3 and keep up the great work ^__^

It DOES cost money for us to take the surveys when you need to have it send a Pin to your phone, costing $2-5 X times until you un-subscribe…
For me, if it were 1 time I wold do it in a heart beat. What’s $5 for hundreds of hours of free TV? It’s worth it, but I can see why most people would just find another site offering free TV without ads.

i agree with valheru – i have no problem filling out surveys, if i have enough free time to watch stuff on here then i clearly have time for that! but i dont trust any site that wants me to send a pin back, which then gives them my mobile number and charges me! i dont trust that there wont be other stupid charges and the idea that this will keep coming back around is what deters me, mainly.
i dont know if this would work for WME, but wikipedia right now is running a campaign to get people to donate to their site to keep it running and free – they have a huge banner across the top that uses a multitude of emotive and factual reasons why people should give – it really grabs your attention and when my pay comes in next week im giving, because i use wiki so much. i didnt even see the ‘donate’ part on this website, maybe it needs to be bigger?
im sorry if thats not any use to you, but i do hope you find a good solution that makes it possible for you to keep running such a good site while keeping the users happy. thanks for all the hard work!

Thanks for the comment so far people!
I have been testing a lot of surveys, and I think that I’ve sorted the right ones out for visitors from the US and the UK. There should be no more mobile number surveys, just quick and simple ones, that really do unlock the page.
Once you unlock one showpage, it pretty much unlocks all pages. So you do not have to do multiple surveys, just one every 24 hours – if you visit a show page.
I will not put them on the single episode pages, just to keep the hassle to a minimum.
Thanks for understanding.
@ gemma, I don’t think WME gets the same kind of visitors as wiki does
Even though they need millions of dollars, and I only need $500, I’ve tried and failed with the donations

I just wanted to say this is a really great site and you do a great job keeping it running.
I don’t mind doing a survey as long as it doesn’t ask for my mobile number, definitely try and reduce these surveys that ask for a mobile number as that put me off going any further.
Have you considered selling advertising space privately without Adsense etc?
For example, i know John Chow sells space on his blog by the month through Paypal and you may be able to generate an income this way.
http://www.johnchow.com/advertise/
There’s his section on how to apply to advertise on his blog. Perhaps try this and see how successful it is? Hope this helps in some way

Also, i forgot to add, maybe if you made the site more personal people would feel obliged to donate. For example, forums often give people a sense of community and connection to the website.

Hi Andy,
I’ve toyed with the idea to have a couple of private ads on the site, but I wouldn’t know where to get advertisers
And as for forums, I’ve tried that too, but everyone gets stuck in the chatroom, and nobody uses the forum

Bob hi, I was happy to send $10 to you. Your site is the best and you always try to fill requests. I’ll try the survey – but that has always put me off in the past on other sites. And thanks for not considering the flashing and blinking ads. Come on people loose the purse strings. WME deserves our support.

I found this article which is quite informative.
I guess in this situation it is kind of important to remember that every little bit helps, you can try a number of different techniques at the same time as long as they are not intrusive to people.
The surveys are quite intrusive and definitely throw people off, which ultimately doesn’t help the situation as all of the traffic you lose makes the site look less attractive to potential advertisers.
Adsense can be effective but a lot of people(including me) have Ad-Block installed and will never even see the adverts. Whereas private advertisements arent blocked and you can control them to see if they’re suitable to put on your site.
Sorry if i sound patronizing, i don’t mean to be, im just not sure how much you know about this sort of thing
